This Victorian painter of lush romantic scenes set in Roman times was hugely admired critically and popularly throughout his lifetime. After his death, his reputation plummeted as tastes changed, reaching its nadir in the 1950s when he was referred to as the worst painter in history.

Championed by the Getty Museum, his work has regained its stature to stand alongside his contemporaries Leighton and Waterhouse.
