Description

Jose Luis Munuera adapts Herman Melville's classic short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street." It's an absolute beauty.

(The full short story is available online and synopsized on Wikipedia and other sites.)

From the publisher:

New York City, Wall Street.

A young man is engaged in a notary's office. His name is Bartleby. His role is to copy legal documents.

At first, Bartleby is irreproachable. Conscientious, efficient, tireless, he does colossal work, day and night, without ever complaining. His energy is contagious. He pushes his colleagues, who are willingly rebellious, to give the best of themselves.

However one day, the beautiful machine goes wrong. When the boss gives him a job, Bartleby refuses to comply. Politely, but firmly. "I would prefer not to." he replies.

From then on, Bartleby stops. Not only does he stop working, but he refuses to leave the place ...

José Luis Munuera takes the short story of Herman Melville in a masterful adaptation and takes an original look at this text, a stimulating reflection on obedience and passive resistance.

Resume:

New York City, quartier de Wall Street.

I would prefer not, lui répond-il.
