Covarrubias (1904-1957) was the premiere caricaturist in the U.S. in the period between the suicide of Ralph Barton and the rise of Al Hirschfeld. This monograph devoted to Covarrubias' caricature work was produced for an exhibition by the National Portrait Gallery. Besides the many examples of the artist's work, it includes a biography of the artist: a chronology: a comprehensive list of the hundreds of Covarrubias illustrations published in the U.S.: a list of his writings: a selected bibliography: and an reminiscence of Covarrubias by Al Hirschfeld who shared a studio with the artist in the 1920s.
