Description

From the back cover:

A stunningly beautiful woman, an evocative title and a sensational blurb, those were the (not so) secret ingredients of the American pulp magazines and paperbacks from the 1920s until the 1960s.

The stories were written cheaply and printed on even cheaper paper, but it were the full-colour covers that made them stand out AND made them sell so well.

The cover became so important that sometimes it would be designed first; authors would then be shown the cover art and asked to write a story around it.

Fake Vintage Book Covers is a tribute to those artists and designers, specifically to the art of Robert McGinnis and Robert Maguire, whose subjects weren't mere damsels in distress but elegant, sexy and intelligent women.

Belgian artist Kristof Spaey takes these elements, spices them up with humor, seasons them with smart references to pop culture and serves you his unique interpretation of this recipe.

Robert McGinnis: "They are truly little gems!"

This package consists of 4 items:

  • Fake Vintage Book Covers 1: Striped for Pleasure (64-page full-color hardcover)
  • Fake Vintage Book Covers 2: Death Came Slow (64-page full-color hardcover)
  • Life: The History of the Pulp Paperback Fake Vintage Book Covers Magazine (24-page full-color softcover)
  • Fake Vintage Book Covers Signed Postcard

Each 64-page hardcover contains over 130 full-color covers and illustrations, the endpapers each feature a different color illustration on the front and back endpaper. Each hardcover is signed by the artist.

The 24-page magazine (written in English, French, and Dutch) mimics a Life Magazine of the 1950s. Half of the magazine talks about the history of the pulp paperback, the other half is a romanticized story of Spaey and his work. The magazine is a catalogue for a Fake Vintage Book Covers exposition that's touring in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Due to damage from international shipping, the corners of the books are bumped otherwise the books are in new unread condition and Very Fine.
