From the editor David Eggers' introduction:
This issue was guest-edited by longtime McSweeney's contributor Paul Maliszewski. Paul had long ago been talking about a compilation he was putting together around the themes of fact and fiction, hoax and prank, truth and its variations. He thought it would make a great book. I thought it would make a great issue of this quarterly. He acquiesced, and here we are. I think this is one of the very best issues we've published, and it is entirely Paul's creation.
