In this Heritage Press edition of Roughing It, "one of the most characteristic and readable of Mark Twain's works," noted illustrator Noel Sickles contributes eleven full-color paintings and twenty-one black-and-white in-text brush drawings. Sickles described his illustrations as "line drawings over arbitrary color, meaning that color is suggested rather than putting it between the lines." Eight are full-page and three two-page spreads.
Laid in is "The Heritage Club Sandglass," a four-page brochure from the publisher containing biographical information on Twain and Sickles, as well as technical details about the printing.
